There’s something unmistakably comforting about a Cuban sandwich: toasty bread, melty Swiss, smoky ham, tangy pickles, and juicy roast pork all pressed into one perfect bite. This is a no-fuss, bold-flavored sandwich that’s all about the balance of salty, sweet, and tangy. This version sticks to the traditional style, using our homemade smoked carnitas pork as the base. Once that’s ready, the rest comes together fast and makes for a sandwich that rivals any local favorite.

Ingredients (makes 2 large sandwiches):
1 loaf Cuban bread
2-4 tablespoons yellow mustard
4-6 slices Swiss cheese
12 slices deli ham (sweet)
1-2 cups pulled pork
12-15 dill pickle chips
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Preparation:
Slice the loaf into sandwich-sized portions, then cut each piece horizontally. Lightly butter the outsides of the bread.
Spread yellow mustard on the inside of each slice. Layer in this order: pickle chips, ham, pulled pork, and Swiss cheese. Top with the other bread slice.
Heat a skillet or sandwich press over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the pan and press down with a heavy skillet (or use a panini press). Cook 3–4 minutes per side, or until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese is melted.
Cut diagonally and serve warm.
